[Commonplace book], 1825 and later.

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of serious and sentimental poetry by various authors, including Brown's acquaintances, on such subjects as friendship, nature, sorrow, childhood, religion, and the act of album-keeping. The volume contains a substantial number of poems by George Byron and Sir Walter Scott; other poets include Felicia Hemans, Charles Swain, Reginald Heber, and D. M. Moir. Of the poems written by acquaintances, many authors' names have been masked; and several of these poems have been annotated with the year of the poet's death. The collection also contains two acrostics on the name Jane Hannah Rawle, Bristol; as well as a poem, titled Memory, by Penelope Rawle.

Author and physician David MacBeth Moir was born and raised in Musselburgh, Scotland, and studied to be a doctor at the University of Edinburgh. He returned to Mussleburgh to practice medicine, and began writing both poetry and prose for various periodicals, notably Blackwood's Magazine. He was known as Delta, as he often signed his verse with that Greek letter. He also wrote a history of medicine, and an overview of contemporary poetry.
